Somers Town Community Association

Somers Town Community Association is a 30 year old community anchor organisation employing 14 full & part-time staff and providing a range of services to the diverse community of Somers Town in North London, for example a nursery, youth services, community café, older people’s activities. Support was provided by Mark McNestry for the organisation between July 08 and April 09, successfully meeting the following aims:

  • To work with STCA’s Board and staff in reviewing the organisation’s structure (including addressing areas of responsibility and accountability throughout the organisation), and recommending, where appropriate, changes to existing structures
  • To produce, with STCA, an effective Business Plan for the organisation for the period April 2009 to March 2012 through supporting the organisation to agree its mission and clarify its long- and short-term strategic goals, through incorporating structural changes, and to make the case via the Plan for why others should have confidence in the organisation

The overlapping processes, facilitated in their entirety by Mark, engaged all staff and trustees through a series of interviews, facilitated planning days, meetings and presentation. In addition to its summary and background sections, the Structural Review report identified in detail for the organisation its structural effectiveness and structural constraints, provided comparisons with the wider context (for example, market comparisons of roles and salary levels) and made recommendations regarding revising the organisational structure.

The strategic planning process provided the Association with an agreed clarity of purpose, poised to make the most out of their anniversary year, and able to provide the business case in relation to new initiatives such as the refurbishment of the Centre and re-launch of the Café. The attractive and robust Business Plan was structured as follows:

  • Our Purpose
  • Who We Are
  • Our Services and Achievements
  • Where We Are Now
  • Our Future Direction
  • Community Impact
  • Financial Implications
  • Maintaining Quality and Monitoring Progress
